An interview with Anne isabella

What is the first thing you do in the morning?

Make myself a cup of Earl Gray tea. Without it I don’t function very well.

What made you get into fashion design or how did you find yourself going down that path?

I loved drawing, and was encouraged by a teacher to do fashion illustrations, and got hooked. Eventually I went on to study in London at Central Saint Martins, where my drawing skills lead me to study Fashion Print.

You work a lot with nostalgic patterns and cuts, Is there a particular era that influences your work and If so what do you find yourself drawing from the most?

I have generally been quite interested in reinterpreting archetype garments. I have naturally gravitated towards the 1960’s and 70’s, I think it is the sense of optimism, and boldness that were part of that era that intrigues me. I also find it interesting as there is a sense of futuristic design that is funny to interpret today.

You are Danish/French and based in Berlin how does being exposed to these nationalities shape and influence your work, and do you think having been exposed to multiple nationalities is a benefit when it comes to design?

I think that London has also influenced me, in that it has shaped my approach to design. There is no doubt that my designs are a melting pot of all the cultures that are making me as a person. I grew up surrounded by Danish design, and in some ways my interest in 70s design probably comes from that. I think the interest in archetype garments and fashion in general comes from my French side. Berlin is such a creative place to be in, and there is so much art around, and I can really feel that is pushing me to be more daring with my designs. So in many ways it is all informing my work.

What is one thing you would like to see change in the fashion industry, and the way it is currently set up?

Maybe I would be keen on having a smoother manufacturing process. It is actually quite a complex part of the business, and so many strings need to be tied together.

What is something you wish you had known before you created your brand, is there some advice you would have given yourself?

How to use excel, I never thought I would spend so much time on there!

Is there an area outside of fashion that you would have thought about experimenting with and what are some things you are passionate about outside the world of fashion?

I am quite a product oriented person, so anything to do with interior is super interesting to me, and I think that with time I will play with this more and more.

What do you do when you put work aside? How do you recharge?

I love cooking. It really relaxes me, and I love to eat delicious foods. When I can I like to try out new recipes.  I also love being outdoors in nature, I love to go camping and hiking, and getting back to basic.

What’s the last thing you do before bed on a regular day?

I like to give my space tidy, so I can start fresh the next day!
